ABOUT US

AMY HOBBY

Hobby is an Academy Award and Grammy Award nominated producer of 30+ films that have premiered at major festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, London, Telluride, SXSW, and Tribeca. Record Breaker merges Hobby’s love of film, music, and distribution innovation. She has produced a number of influential music documentaries including What Happened Miss Simone? for which she won Emmy and Peabody awards; Dory Previn: On My Way To Where (currently in development as a scripted film); and the festival favorite 1-800-ON-HER-OWN about singer / activist Ani DiFranco. In addition to documentary work, Hobby has produced award-winning scripted films with A-list talent including Ethan Hawke, Bill Murray, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Spader,Toni Collette, and Johnny Depp. In 2019 she co-founded Distribution Advocates which promotes innovation in marketing and audience building for independent cinema.

Cristina Rodriguez - Co-Producer

Cristina is a proud native New Yorker and a certified cinephile. With a versatile background spanning both narrative and documentary filmmaking, Cristina has played an integral role in a diverse range of projects. For five years, she worked at Hard Working Movies in the producing department. At Record Breaker Films+, Cristina’s ability to craft compelling narratives from behind the scenes has made her a force in the production of both short and feature-length films, helping bring powerful stories to life in ways that resonate with audiences.

Samyuktha Sridhar - Development Producer

Samyu has a background in documentary filmmaking, music marketing analysis, and multimedia journalism. As Development Producer at Record Breaker Films+, she is passionate about finding unique, beautiful and high profile stories for RBF’s ongoing slate. Samyu is a graduate of NYU’s documentary journalism program, and lives in Brooklyn. In her free time, you can find her taking photos and curating playlists for oddly specific moods.

Board of Advisors

  • For more than thirty years, Ann Powers has been a professional music writer, since her teen days covering punk and new wave in Seattle Washington, through a career that has included jobs at the Village Voice, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and National Public Radio, where she is currently a critic and correspondent. She has published five books as author or editor, including Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music (2017) and the forthcoming Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell (June 2024). She has been featured in many podcasts and documentaries and co-founded NPR's Turning the Tables series.

  • Danny Kapilian is a producer and presenter of live concerts, cultural events, festivals, and touring productions worldwide, putting on shows at top venues including the Hollywood Bowl, BAM, Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theatre, Barbican Centre, Central Park, Lincoln Center, Newport Jazz Festival and Paris Philharmonie. Danny has produced shows featuring hundreds of artists in all genres ranging from Joni Mitchell to Public Enemy, and Billie Eilish to David Byrne. Other artists include Jon Batiste, The Roots, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Brandi Carlisle, Lauryn Hill and many more. He’s produced multi-media touring events based on music featured in the films of Spike Lee, Bernard Hermann and Melvin Van Peebles.

  • Franki Chan is a former music promoter and DJ, is currently the Chief Creative Officer of IHEARTCOMIX, a creative marketing agency and content studio focused on the worlds of music, entertainment, and lifestyle. For nearly 20 years their specialty has been imaging unique concepts, executing spectacular productions and marketing to new audiences. Some of their recent projects include Daft Punk’s L.A. premiere of Interstella 5555, Lil Nas X’s Silent Rodeo, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever album release, Olivia Rodrigo’s Bus Tour and the Rolling Stones Hackney Diamonds release party with Lady Gaga. Clients include Disney, TikTok, Marvel, Warner Bros, MGM and many others.

LORI CHEATLE

Lori Cheatle turned her lifelong obsession with music into co-founding Record Breaker Films+. Prior to this, she Produced or Executive Produced over 25 award-winning films through Hard Working Movies, including MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A., winner of a Special Jury Award at Sundance and the IDA Award for Best Music Documentary;  and KIKI by Sara Jordenö, about the underground ballroom scene in New York City, which premiered at Sundance and won the Berlin Teddy Award. KIKI opened the Red Bull Music Academy Festival with a large-scale ballroom performance, followed by multiple events worldwide. Other titles include Dreaming Walls, about the iconic Chelsea Hotel (Executive Produced by Martin Scorsese, Magnolia Pictures/Hulu); Captivated, directed by Jeremiah Zagar (HBO/Sky Atlantic) and the recent Peabody winning Night Is Not Eternal, by Nanfu Wang (HBO). Lori received the Amazon Sundance Producers Award for her commitment to projects of bold vision.

Philip Thompson - Editor and Post-Production Manager

Phillip Thompson is a filmmaker and editor from New England, based in Brooklyn. Phil was selected as one of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film”, as a Sundance Adobe x Ignite Fellow, and is a Sundance Screenwriter's Lab fellow. Phil is currently involved in creative advising, editing and post-production on Record Breaker Films+ projects. Previously, he coordinated post-production at Hard Working Movies. Phil is interested in work that investigates popular media’s influence on culture. He was raised by his mother, his father, and his television.

  • As founder of NiKA Media. Ken’s work as an Executive Producer and Producer includes the films One Child Nation (Amazon StudiO); Icarus (Netflix); The Apollo (HBO) and The Lost Leonardo (Sony Pictures Classics). Ken serves on the boards of Mother Jones Magazine and City Winery International and is an advisor and investor partner in technology companies such as reverb.com and deskpass.com.

  • Dean of the USC Thornton School of Music, is a multi-talented scholar, music journalist, author, musician, performer, film and music producer, songwriter, radio and video host and event curator. King was a founder and chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at Tisch School of the Arts New York University, working alongside Clive Davis to develop the program. He has produced music projects featuring a wide range of musicians including Esperanza Spalding, Questlove, Angelique Kidjo, Santigold, Chuck D, Steve Perry, Alanis Morrissette, Dua Lipa, Youssou N’Dour, Arooj Aftab and many others.

  • Music Supervisor Maggie Phillips has lent her expertise to the creation of some of television and films’ most unique sounds. She is the music supervisor on Raven Jackson’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt; Academy Award winning Moonlight; FX’s Fargo, Kindred, and Snowfall; Hulu’s The Great, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Dropout and Normal People; and Amazon Prime’s Bosch. Notable other credits include Apple TV+’s Shining Girls; HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death.
